tldr; Congress hasn’t done much is a fact, not so much a belief. Congress has enriched India, only when compared to Sub Saharan Countries, not with whom India wants itself to be compared.
I’d rather point pain points, why Congress is not seen with Gratitude in 2016, but with contempt.
I wouldn’t want to debate so much on the hard/shiny examples strutted as symbols of Progress, like Green Revolution, Space Exploration, 5 Year Plans, Huge Dams, ICDS, MNREGA, Crop Loan Waiver or for that matter 1991–93’s LPG (Liberalization, Privatization & Globalization) .
Congress prides itself as Party that fought for Independence from British Rule. But it misses the fact that most of it’s fight was inconsequential for power transfer to Indians. It may surprise us, but it’s a fact.
British left India, when the cost of ruling over Crown Jewel of British Empire was more than benefits of maintaining it.
Congress Policies since 1947 have made below statement true.
If you put the Central government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years there’d be a shortage of sand.
India has chronically shortages in every resource a human being needs…… Drinking Water, Sanitation, Mass Transport, Food, these days bandwidth.
One wouldn’t believe this was the land of abundance which attracted traders, barbarians from across the world for nearly 2300 years until 1850.
Congress has pursued the policy “Unquestioning Loyalty to AICC President”. No one has the willingness to point out He/She COULD be wrong. This has been it’s bane.
Congress has followed policies that have ensure Indians are crippled in doing themselves any good. Most of good things in life continue being away from the clutch of majority of Indians.
Nehru usurped Private Property, Free Speech and most of which were granted by wise men (Benegal Narsing Rao, the Architect of Indian Constitution, Rajen Babu the Chairman of Drafting Committee & Bhimrao Ambedkar, the wordsmith & others) of India.
He built an Administration that pilloried people to mend their lives themselves.
Every activity was
- controlled (Personal Decision making curtailed) ,
- licensed (ensured abundant production won’t happen & Prices will remain high)
- needing permission which would take years (Efficiency, Speed of Operations & Adhering to Deadlines are compromised or simply abandoned)
His policies ensured Letter of Law took precedence over Spirit of Law.
Do-Gooder Babu’s had to bear audit-objections & inquiry committees.
Public, had to bear crippling shortages
Industrialists had to bear with draconian laws which made handling Delhi more important than running business.
Irony took such a turn that in 1962, China had built adequate facilities in Tawang Sector to jail 3000 Indian Armymen, to listen to conversations in many Indian languages.
Nehru couldn’t even allocate 3000 military men to Chinese war camps, foregt safeguarding India’s borders.
His bombastic boasts had to end with a meek & miserable “My heart goes out to the people of Assam”.
His progeny hasn’t done much to cut down this practice, but have increased.
Congress was given majority right thru years, but all it has done is enriching itself at the expense of the country.
It never had any coalition compulsion until 1991, when how much should a person consume, produce, eat, talk (remember Emergency 1975–77), do was all decided by a bunch of people sitting in New Delhi.
Another bunch termed as Kitchen Cabinet would decide who would Lord over states. Worse, it would even turn down elected Governments (Article 356).
Amend the Constitution, if Courts go against the Government.
BJP is a shining example, where people can rise by cultivating masses. Congress abhors Mass Leaders.
The Culture Congress has imposed on itself & much on India too is of Stay-Loyal, Avoid Risks, Stay happy in what you have,….
Any progress that we’ve had is due to
- keep the show running
- ingenuity of people
Well, too much rant. There’s hope.
Masses rise or sink with their leaders . 20′th century has been witness to this miracle.
Though, Joko Kenyata took Kenya, Idi amin took Uganda down with them, Lee Kwan Yiew took Singapore while British Administrators took Hong Kong above with them.
Hongkong, Singapore even today import right from drinking water to petrol, but have vastly improved facilities that people just can’t wait to immigrate there.
HongKong (1,106 sq km) is the size of 4 districts of any state in India.
Well, it’s just time Congress sees things as they are & not as as it wants to see.
This much reply doesn't do justice to the question.
Needs more write up.
Let me try to come up with it.
